Snippets: Bradford Cancer Research Tournament

Hamiz Hamizan is currently a first year undergraduate doing BEng Mechatronics at the University of Sheffield. This is his account of Bradford Cancer Research UK Mini Tournament (BruBrad): The football tournament on 27th November 2010 was organised by BruBrad society at 5 A Live Soccer Centre, Bradford. They were 8 teams participating. BruSheff team was lead by Izzat Zaini and his team members, Hanis Jefri, Nazrin Narawi, Rahimi, Mustaqim, Fadhil and Hamiz Hamizan. We arrived at Bradford roughly about 9am, since the soccer centre opens at 11am, we decided to take a walk around the city to see how Bradford looks like. BruSheff started playing around 12pm against a team wearing blue shirts. Our first match was a draw. We lost the 2nd match against Malaysian team by 2-0. Since we won the 3rd match against Newcastle by 1-0, our team marched into semi-final against Birmingham. We had a draw 2-2 in the semi-final, so the game was decided by penalty and we lost by 3-2. Details of the event are as follows: Sheffield Christmas Lights Switch On Date: 21st November 2010 Time: 1pm to 5.30pm Location: Sheffield City Centre Pricing: Free It’s the biggest day in the city’s festive calendar and this year's Christmas Lights Switch On is set to be an exciting day for the whole family. This free city centre event will take place on Sunday 21 November between 1pm and 5.30pm. The main stage at Barkers Pool will host a line-up of musical stars introduced throughout the afternoon by Real Radio presenters. And for the first time ever Sheffield City Council can confirm a new pop sensation performance for kids and families on The Moor. Zak, Panzee, Tang, and Drum better known as CBeebies newest pop craze The ZingZillas, will play a very special gig at The Moor Christmas tree switch on at 3pm as well as waving to the crowds during several appearances on the Town Hall steps throughout the afternoon. This is his account of MASSOC & BruSheff Paintball: We were all geared up for the day and we were introduced to the safety procedures near the staging area. Guess who we were introduced to. That's right. THE TERMINATOR!!! Unfortunately, he didn't show up to any of our games. Moving on~ Red Candy vs Blue Candy First Map: The Graveyard Objective: Capture the flag from the enemy's side and bring it back to team's flag in 10 minutes. First Round: Blue Candy eliminated Red Candy. With the land safe but completely muddy, I ran to get the flag and returned it to base. 10 points were awarded to Blue Candy! Nazrin Narawi is currently a first year undergraduate doing BEng Systems & Control Engineering at the University of Sheffield. This is his account of MASSOC & BruSheff Paintball: The paintball event last Saturday was jointly organised by BruSheff and MASSOC. 35 people including non-members turned up. It was organised at Delta Force in Wakefield, just 30 minutes away from Sheffield. Not many people know this, but throughout the history of Delta Force, it has attracted many iconic figures such as Wayne Rooney, John Terry, Rio Ferdinand, Lewis Hamilton, and so on. Delta Force has managed to provide the best service possible. They are very organised. The Marshalls are friendly, and provide good equipment (markers, coveralls, proper headgears, etc). We played in 5 different maps throughout the day, each having different objectives in order to win. The first map we played was called the Graveyard. This is her account of Fright Night: Needless to state the obvious, but I'm going to say it anyway, last sunday was halloween. The biggest halloween party was held in, none other than, Sheffield's city centre. The city was full of people wearing interesting different costumes, ranging from vampires and devils, to tarzans to, to BSP's overalls lookalike, to even bananas. I still don't get how a banana can be a halloween costume though, but hey, what do I know, maybe there's a story behind it. Ok, back to fright night, there were 2 rides that look scary, the pendulum and I can't remember the name of the other one, the rest of the rides were for children. The Malaysian and Singaporean Society (MASSOC) has invited us to play against them in a paintball tournament. Details of the event are as follows: MASSOC & BruSheff Paintball Date: 30th October 2010 Time: 9am to 6pm Location: Delta Force, Wakefield Pricing: £25 (members) / £27 (non-members) Meeting point will be at Bar One, 7.45am latest. It is very important that you keep this in mind to ensure the coach leaves on time. The price includes entry fee, coach fare and 200 pellets. Sheffield: After Dark

The Brunei-Sheffield freshers are especially encouraged to attend this event. In conjunction with Bonfire night, there will be a firework show in Sheffield. Details of the event are as follows: After Dark Date: 5th November 2010 Time: 5.30pm to 10pm Location: Don Valley Grass Bowl Pricing: £9 Tickets can be purchased from Sheffield Arena, University of Sheffield Union Box Office or Sheffield Hallam Student Union. After Dark is Yorkshire’s No 1 Fireworks Spectacular attracting up to 20,000 people each year. The event was established in 1996 and now offers live music on the Real Radio Stage (past acts include Miss Frank, Girls Aloud, Simon Webb, Blazin Squad, Matt Willis and Wet Wet Wet), funfair, bonfire, food stalls, bar (at Ice Sheffield overlooking the event), fire spinners and a massive fireworks display set to music. Details of the event are as follows: Sheffield Fright Night Date: 31st October 2010 Time: 3.30pm to 8.30pm Location: Sheffield City Centre Pricing: Free Always staged on the Sunday before Halloween (in 2010 Sunday 31st Oct), the roads are closed in Sheffield City Centre around Fargate, Barkers Pool, Peace Gardens, Surrey Street, Leopold Street, Orchard Square, Millennium Square and the Winter Garden for this ‘mass promenade’ event. Attractions for 2009 included street theatre, ghost tours, Star Wars Stormtroopers, haunted house, ghost train, Dalek and Cyberman, Hagrid lookalike, a fancy dress catwalk, funfair rides/stalls, stilt walkers, a samba band, food stalls, children’s activities and craft stalls.
