Brunei Yorkshire Games 2014

Brunei Yorkshire Games 2014 was held on the 22nd of November 2014,  at the Concord Sports Centre in Sheffield, United Kingdom.

BYG was first introduced in 2011 and was initially formed by the five Brunei societies in Yorkshire (BruSheff, BruHull, BruBrad, BruLeeds and BruYork). Sheffield was the first to host BYG and now, BYG is a highly successful sporting annual BruSheff event, hoping to continue providing a platform for students to participate in team sports which are not usually offered during regular sports meet. BYG is open to all Brunei Student Societies present in the United Kingdom.

The Brunei Yorkshire Games involves dodge ball, which is a different team sport that is usually not offered during regular sports meets, and also, for the first time ever, Ultimate Frisbee. We are trying to attract and encourage more Bruneian Students in Sheffield as well as all over the United Kingdom to participate in the upcoming sports event. The Brunei Yorkshire Games aims to offer fun and engaging games that everyone can easily pick up due to their casualness without eliminating the element of competitiveness in the twist – this is what makes this sports meet unique and fresh.

The event started with the opening ceremony with Surah Al-Fatihah led by Hirzie, followed by an opening speech by Md Mustaqim, the Chairperson for the games. In his opening address, Mustaqim reiterated the aims and objectives of the games in bringing Bruneians together to compete in a friendly and conducive environment. Among other things mentioned were safety precautions during throughout the day especially for participants.

The games ensued soon after, beginning with Ultimate Frisbee, where 3 male teams and 3 female teams battled it out in their respective categories for the top spot, as trophies were presented to the top team in each category only. The BruNotts team then emerged victorious with both their male and female groups, quite an achievement to say the least.

After that, the games continued with dodgeball, where 6 male teams and 7 female teams fought out for the top three positions. Midway through the round robins, the event breaked for Lunch and the Zuhur+Asar prayers. Just as the break was coming to an end, the guest of honour, Cikgu Ali Hamdani bin Haji Muhammad Diah, graced the event with his presence. He made a short address followed by the unveiling of the event banner for BYG 2014. A token of appreciation was then presented to the guest of honour.
