Brunei Yorkshire game, also known as BYG. What is it ? a football tournament ? netball ? basketball ? no..its not what i mentioned..its something new..it is a Dodgeball tournament between Bruneian that are in Yorkshire. The official logo is:

Venue: Concord Sports Centre, Sheffield

Date: 29th October 2011

Time: 11am untill 5pm

Extra information: there will be 2 small stalls selling some deserts from both Bruneian and Malaysian society

Raya Celebration at KACA

BruSheff hosted a charity Raya Celebration at Pusat KACA, Kg. Kiulap, on the 10th September 2011, to raise awareness among members, of children with special needs.

Alhamdulillah the charity Raya Celebration event with KACA was a great success. Due to a small mistake, we had to do this event in collaboration with Sekolah Perdagangan. Nevertheless, it turns out to be an awesome accidental joint-event!

Kudos to the Event Organisers, Dk Za'imah Aqilah Pg Samsulbahri and Siti Nurazimah Haji Hashim. Without their effort and dedication, this wouldn't have happen.

Sungkai Gathering 2011

You are invited to Brusheff Sungkai Gathering.

Venue: Amanah Harith Restaurant & Catering, Citis Square, Jaya Setia Berakas (next to Times Square)

Date: Saturday, August 20th

This event aims to get as many Brusheff members – alumni, current students and newcomers – and break our fast together. This will be a good opportunity to meet friends; old and new.

An Ice-Breaking Session will also be held prior to sungkai, thus Brusheff freshers are encouraged to come to this event.

The provisional programme for the evening would be as follows:
• 17:00 Start of Ice-breaking Activities
The current Brusheff society members are all welcomed to take part in this session, or else it is not compulsory.
• 17:45 Arrival of other Brusheff members and alumni
• 18:34 Maghrib prayer time/Sungkai

The buffet is priced B$13.90 per person, a special offer just for this particular event.

A mosque is nearby to perform the Maghrib prayers, even Isya' and Terawikh prayers.

2. Ketika Menerima Kertas Soalan:

قَالَ رَبِّ اشْرَحْ لِي صَدْرِي. وَيَسِّرْ لِي أَمْرِي. وَاحْلُلْ عُقْدَةً مِنْ لِسَانِي. يَفْقَهُوا قَوْلِي.

Maksudnya: “Wahai Tuhanku, lapangkanlah bagiku dadaku. Dan mudahkanlah bagiku tugasku. Dan lepaskanlah simpulan daripada lidahku, supaya mereka faham perkataanku.”

3. Ketika Sukar Menjawab:

ياَ حَيُّ يَا قَيُّوْمُ، بِرَحْمَتِكَ أَسْتَغِيْثُ.

Maksudnya: “Wahai Tuhan yang maha hidup lagi maha berdiri dengan sendirinya. Dengan rahmatMu aku bermohon pertolongan.”

4. Atau:

اَللَّهُمَّ لاَ سَهْلَ إِلاَّ مَا جَعَلْتَهُ سَهْلاً وَأَنْتَ تَجْعَلُ الْحَزَنَ الصَّعْبَ إِنْ شِئْتَ سَهْلاً.

Maksudnya: “Ya Allah! Tidak ada kesenangan melainkan pada perkara yang engkau jadikan kesenangan padanya. Dan engkau menjadikan kedukacitaan dan kesukaran sebagai mudah dan senang jika Engkau kehendaki.”

5. Jika Anda Terlupa Jawapan:

اَللَّهُمَّ يَا جَامِعَ النَّاسِ لِيَوْمٍ لاَ رَيْبَ فِيْهِ اجْمَعْ عَلىَ ضَالَّتِيْ مَعْلُوْمَاتِيْ.

Maksudnya: “Ya Allah! Tuhan yang menghimpunkan manusia pada hari yang tiada keraguan padanya. Himpunkan barangan dan maklumat yang hilang daripadaku.”

Aisah Razali is currently a first year undergraduate doing BEng Biomedical Engineering at the University of Sheffield. This is her account of World Week 2011:

Today was such a fantastic day! I had tremendous amount of fun meeting people and introducing Brunei and her beautiful culture. I was pleasantly surprised that a vast majority of the students who visited knew about Brunei and were very enthusiastic in learning more about our country. We jumped at the chance to display our beautiful, elegant traditional costumes and let them have a feel of our rich customs by giving them a makeover - the Bruneian style . The mingling of societies of our neighboring countries resulted in an exuberant atmosphere filled with laughter which will be embedded in my fond memories of World Week 2011.

The South-east Asian day of the world week went very well yesterday. The committee members would like to thank everyone who came yesterday and prepared for the event. We would like to relay our gratitude for:

those who was able to spare some time early morning yesterday to set-up the booth.
all of the wonderful suggestions, ideas, activities, comments and videos posted on the event page.
for those who helped in the preparation and materialization of the ideas last Tuesday night.

Towards the end of the day, I remembered talking to Aidil and his friends. "So basically every Bruneian knows every Bruneian in the University?", they asked. As I turned around the booth and saw how lively we are being at the booth, I realized how much each and everyone of us had made BruSheff, 'a home away from home'. You all are awesome. ;)

Snippets: Bradford Cancer Research Tournament

Hamiz Hamizan is currently a first year undergraduate doing BEng Mechatronics at the University of Sheffield. This is his account of Bradford Cancer Research UK Mini Tournament (BruBrad):

The football tournament on 27th November 2010 was organised by BruBrad society at 5 A Live Soccer Centre, Bradford. They were 8 teams participating. BruSheff team was lead by Izzat Zaini and his team members, Hanis Jefri, Nazrin Narawi, Rahimi, Mustaqim, Fadhil and Hamiz Hamizan. We arrived at Bradford roughly about 9am, since the soccer centre opens at 11am, we decided to take a walk around the city to see how Bradford looks like.

BruSheff started playing around 12pm against a team wearing blue shirts. Our first match was a draw. We lost the 2nd match against Malaysian team by 2-0. Since we won the 3rd match against Newcastle by 1-0, our team marched into semi-final against Birmingham. We had a draw 2-2 in the semi-final, so the game was decided by penalty and we lost by 3-2. Our final match was against another Malaysian team. This match was for 3rd place of the tournament. Since our players were exhausted, we lost the final match by 2-1. The tournament was won by Malaysian team, followed by Birmingham and another Malaysian team.

It’s the biggest day in the city’s festive calendar and this year's Christmas Lights Switch On is set to be an exciting day for the whole family.

This free city centre event will take place on Sunday 21 November between 1pm and 5.30pm. The main stage at Barkers Pool will host a line-up of musical stars introduced throughout the afternoon by Real Radio presenters. And for the first time ever Sheffield City Council can confirm a new pop sensation performance for kids and families on The Moor.

Zak, Panzee, Tang, and Drum better known as CBeebies newest pop craze The ZingZillas, will play a very special gig at The Moor Christmas tree switch on at 3pm as well as waving to the crowds during several appearances on the Town Hall steps throughout the afternoon. Snippets: MASSOC & BruSheff Paintball 2

Khairi Isnon Ismail is currently a first year undergraduate doing BSc Biomedical Science at the University of Sheffield. This is his account of MASSOC & BruSheff Paintball:

We were all geared up for the day and we were introduced to the safety procedures near the staging area. Guess who we were introduced to. That's right. THE TERMINATOR!!! Unfortunately, he didn't show up to any of our games. Moving on~

Red Candy vs Blue Candy
First Map: The Graveyard
Objective: Capture the flag from the enemy's side and bring it back to team's flag in 10 minutes.
First Round: Blue Candy eliminated Red Candy. With the land safe but completely muddy, I ran to get the flag and returned it to base. 10 points were awarded to Blue Candy!
Second Round: Blue Candy were out of ammunition and it was almost the end of the 10 minutes period. Red Candy ran to get enemy's flag and there was nothing Blue Candy could do. With the flag in Red Candy's hands before they could return it to their base, they were awarded 6 points whilst Blue Candy was awarded 4 points.

Second Map: Castle Wolfenstein
Attacker's Objective: Attack the enemy base and raise the flag after 2 minutes. (Respawn enabled)
Defender's Objective: Defend the castle by preventing enemy approach to the flag without leaving the castle. (Respawn disabled)
First Round: Blue Candy as attacker and Red Candy as defender. Blue Candy managed to raise the flag in about 3 minutes 20 seconds, gaining 10 points for the team.
Second Round: Red Candy as attacker and Blue Candy as defender. Red Candy managed to raise the flag in about 3 minutes 50 seconds, gaining 10 points for the team.

Third Map: Tomb Raider
Objective: Get to the ancient stone pyramid and retrieve a sacred amulet (named “Ed” as Andy the Marshall said, “Edward” as Gareth the other Marshall corrected) and set it on the enemy's base only after the 1st minute.
First Round: Red Candy managed to do so and won themselves 10 points.
Second Round: Blue Candy almost ended it with victory, twice! But in the end, Red Candy conquered the land and has done it again. Another 10 points to Red Candy.

Lunchtime!

Fourth Map: Viet Cong Village
Objective: Conquer as many huts as many as possible out of the 5 huts present by having one person in the hut within the time limit.
First Round: Blue Candy managed to conquer 4 huts and Red Candy 1, totalling to 8 points for Blue and 2 points for Red Candies.
Second Round: Red Candy managed to conquer 4 huts and Blue Candy 1, totalling to 8 points for Red and 2 points for Blue Candies.

BRUSHEFF vs MASSOC
Fifth & Final Map: Afghan Fort
Attacker's Objective: Attack the enemy base and plant the bomb after the first minute within 10 minutes. (Respawn enabled)
Defender's Objective: Defend the base by preventing enemy approach to plant the bomb for 10 minutes without leaving the base in the first minute. (Respawn disabled)
First Round: MASSOC as attackers and BRUSHEFF as defenders. MASSOC managed to plant the bomb in a shocking 9 minutes 57 seconds, just 3 seconds away. MASSOC was awarded 4 points.
Second Round: BRUSHEFF as attackers and MASSOC as defenders. BRUSHEFF managed to plant the bomb in a victorious 9 minutes 50 seconds, just 10 seconds away. BRUSHEFF was awarded 4 points.

Final Score: (assuming MASSOC is Red Candy and BRUSHEFF is Blue Candy) Red Candy has gained 56 points while Blue Candy has gained 54 points.

Snippets: MASSOC & BruSheff Paintball 1

Nazrin Narawi is currently a first year undergraduate doing BEng Systems & Control Engineering at the University of Sheffield. This is his account of MASSOC & BruSheff Paintball:

The paintball event last Saturday was jointly organised by BruSheff and MASSOC. 35 people including non-members turned up. It was organised at Delta Force in Wakefield, just 30 minutes away from Sheffield. Not many people know this, but throughout the history of Delta Force, it has attracted many iconic figures such as Wayne Rooney, John Terry, Rio Ferdinand, Lewis Hamilton, and so on. Delta Force has managed to provide the best service possible. They are very organised. The Marshalls are friendly, and provide good equipment (markers, coveralls, proper headgears, etc).

We played in 5 different maps throughout the day, each having different objectives in order to win. The first map we played was called the Graveyard. The mission is “Capture the Flag”, which means Team A must capture Team B’s flag and bring it back to base in order to win. It was good to start with a simple game. This way, us first timers are able to get used to the basics. As we played through the maps, the difficulty of the mission increases.

The climax of the day was certainly the match between BruSheff and MASSOC. The first game of the match had BruSheff team be the defender of a base. The objective for us was to ensure that the attacker (MASSOC) fail to plant the bomb in our base within 10 minutes. Our strategy was simply to have everyone stationed at every part of the base, with sharp shooter Nash defending from the middle of the base. It was all going well, but MASSOC managed to plant the bomb and it took them 9 minutes 57 seconds, which was close! They earned 4 points. The second game had us switched sides with MASSOC, and our role now is to attack. The strategy laid out was for us to divide into 3 groups - Left Flank led by Fadhlan, Middle Flank led by Nash and Right Flank led by Hadi Afiq. The Side Flanks were tasked to give immediate impact on the enemy, while the Middle Flank acts as distraction. We used smoke grenades to blind the enemy, but it wasn’t as effective as we thought. The game goes on, until a point where there was a bit of confusion within the team. Amidst that, Izzat, Fadhil and Andre (a non-member), turned heroes as they bravely charged into the enemy base with a shield as protection, and the bomb in their hand. The game ended with BruSheff too nearly missing the time limit. We got 4 points. But, we did it in 9 minutes 50 seconds.

All in all, paintball is a game where everyone is supposed to have fun and it wasn’t meant to be taken too seriously. The paints aren’t as painful as I thought. In fact, I really enjoyed the day! The only setback was the muddy states of the maps. Overall, it is a great stress reliever!

Needless to state the obvious, but I'm going to say it anyway, last sunday was halloween. The biggest halloween party was held in, none other than, Sheffield's city centre. The city was full of people wearing interesting different costumes, ranging from vampires and devils, to tarzans to, to BSP's overalls lookalike, to even bananas. I still don't get how a banana can be a halloween costume though, but hey, what do I know, maybe there's a story behind it. Ok, back to fright night, there were 2 rides that look scary, the pendulum and I can't remember the name of the other one, the rest of the rides were for children. There were 2 spooky houses, and sadly for us, those were for kids as well. Malu jua kami kan masuk kalau for kids saja. Karang kana ucap inda sadar diri. Apart from the rides, there were also performances. Some of the performances were fun, some were weird but most of them were, unfortunately, blocked by the crowd. The performances included a group of girls dancing freestyle (i think. haha i'm not good with dance genres), a fully naked middle aged man immersed in a bathtub full of giuk, a woman dancing with fire, and others which were blocked by the abovementioned crowd. Stalls were erected everywhere, some were for games, some were for souvenirs, others were for food.

All in all, it was a really enjoyable night. Beautiful, bright neons, sometimes even blinding ones, light up the city, with a mixture of aromas of fries and cotton candy and sweat of Sheffield peeps.

After Dark is Yorkshire’s No 1 Fireworks Spectacular attracting up to 20,000 people each year.

The event was established in 1996 and now offers live music on the Real Radio Stage (past acts include Miss Frank, Girls Aloud, Simon Webb, Blazin Squad, Matt Willis and Wet Wet Wet), funfair, bonfire, food stalls, bar (at Ice Sheffield overlooking the event), fire spinners and a massive fireworks display set to music.

Location: Sheffield City Centre

Always staged on the Sunday before Halloween (in 2010 Sunday 31st Oct), the roads are closed in Sheffield City Centre around Fargate, Barkers Pool, Peace Gardens, Surrey Street, Leopold Street, Orchard Square, Millennium Square and the Winter Garden for this ‘mass promenade’ event. Attractions for 2009 included street theatre, ghost tours, Star Wars Stormtroopers, haunted house, ghost train, Dalek and Cyberman, Hagrid lookalike, a fancy dress catwalk, funfair rides/stalls, stilt walkers, a samba band, food stalls, children’s activities and craft stalls.

In addition to the main event (3.30pm until 8.30pm) there was also staged a "Fright Night's Little Brother" event on The Moor with loads of halloween fun for younger children including a Harry Potter lookalike, Dalek, street entertainers, giveaways, childrens rides and much more.

Travel South Yorkshire encouraged event goers to leave their cars at home and get to the event by bus, tram and train. For more information (click here)

اَللَّهُمَّ إِنِّيْ أَسْأَلُكَ فَهْمَ النَّبِيِّيْنَ وَحِفْظَ الْمُرْسَلِيْنَ وَالْمَلاَئِكَةِ الْمُقَرَّبِيْنَ. اَللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْ لِسَانِيْ عَامِرًا بِذِكْرِكَ وَقَلْبِيْ مَلِيْئًا بِخَشْيَتِكَ، إِنَّكَ عَلَى مَا تَشَاءُ قَدِيْرٌ.

Maksudnya: “Ya Allah! Aku memohon daripadaMu kefahaman para nabi, ingatan para rasul dan malaikat terhampir. Ya Allah! Jadikanlah lidahku basah dengan zikir kepadaMu, hatiku dipenuhi dengan takut kepadaMu. Sesungguhnya Engkau maha berkuasa di atas segala apa yang Engkau kehendaki.”

Maksudnya: “Ya Allah! Sesungguhnya aku menitip apa yang aku baca, faham dan hafal kepadaMu. Maka kembalikanlah ia kepadaku ketika aku memerlukannya. Sesungguhnya Engkau maha berkuasa di atas segala sesuatu.”

Doa Pada Hari Peperiksaan

Dicadangkan agar doa-doa berikut diucapkan pada hari peperiksaan, iaitu sebelum dan semasa peperiksaan berlangsung:

1. Ketika memasuki dewan peperiksaan:

وَقُلْ رَبِّ أَدْخِلْنِي مُدْخَلَ صِدْقٍ وَأَخْرِجْنِي مُخْرَجَ صِدْقٍ وَاجْعَلْ لِي مِنْ لَدُنْكَ سُلْطَانًا نَصِيرًا

Maksudnya: “Dan katakanlah: “Wahai Tuhanku! Masukkanlah daku dengan kemasukan yang benar lagi mulia, serta keluarkanlah daku daripadanya dengan cara keluar yang benar lagi mulia; dan berikanlah kepadaku daripada sisiMu hujah keterangan serta kekuasaan yang menolongku.”

2. Ketika menerima kertas soalan:

قَالَ رَبِّ اشْرَحْ لِي صَدْرِي. وَيَسِّرْ لِي أَمْرِي. وَاحْلُلْ عُقْدَةً مِنْ لِسَانِي. يَفْقَهُوا قَوْلِي.

Maksudnya: “Wahai Tuhanku, lapangkanlah bagiku dadaku. Dan mudahkanlah bagiku tugasku. Dan lepaskanlah simpulan daripada lidahku, supaya mereka faham perkataanku.”

3. Ketika sukar menjawab:

ياَ حَيُّ يَا قَيُّوْمُ، بِرَحْمَتِكَ أَسْتَغِيْثُ.

Maksudnya: “Wahai Tuhan yang maha hidup lagi maha berdiri dengan sendirinya. Dengan rahmatMu aku bermohon pertolongan.”

4. Atau:

اَللَّهُمَّ لاَ سَهْلَ إِلاَّ مَا جَعَلْتَهُ سَهْلاً وَأَنْتَ تَجْعَلُ الْحَزَنَ الصَّعْبَ إِنْ شِئْتَ سَهْلاً.

Maksudnya: “Ya Allah! Tidak ada kesenangan melainkan pada perkara yang engkau jadikan kesenangan padanya. Dan engkau menjadikan kedukacitaan dan kesukaran sebagai mudah dan senang jika Engkau kehendaki.”

5. Jika anda terlupa jawapan:

اَللَّهُمَّ يَا جَامِعَ النَّاسِ لِيَوْمٍ لاَ رَيْبَ فِيْهِ اجْمَعْ عَلىَ ضَالَّتِيْ مَعْلُوْمَاتِيْ.

Maksudnya: “Ya Allah! Tuhan yang menghimpunkan manusia pada hari yang tiada keraguan padanya. Himpunkan barangan dan maklumat yang hilang daripadaku.”

BruSheff performs at International Cultural Evening

Brunei Sheffield Students Society (BruSheff) recently participated in an event called International Cultural Evening organised by the International Students' Committee of University of Sheffield. All proceeds of the evening went to the Haiti Emergency Appeal.

In one of their last big performances for this term, BruSheff managed to make a spectacular show in front of hundreds of international audience that night. Members from the society participated in a stage performance combining drama, Syair with the dance of Samalindang set in a historical scene of ancient Brunei. It was beautifully narrated and made the performance one the best amongst the performing countries.

Dk Aainaa Majidah Pg Haji Idris, one of the performers and also Vice President of BruSheff said, "It was a great experience to be involved in this successful event. The audience really enjoyed it especially the Syair, and we had a lot of interesting responses from them after the show. With that, we were able to showcase Brunei's cultural heritage to a lot of different people."

Showing their amazing cultural performances, some of the other societies who performed were Chinese, Vietnamese, Sri Lankan, Pakistani and Arab.

BruSheff was established in 2008 and currently has 40 members, all of whom are Bruneian students studying at University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University.

A message from BruSheff President:

Just a very brief message to all. Many thanks to all Brusheff members who participated in the International Cultural Evening performance. This society had achieved one part of the constitutions which we have been longing to do since previous years. I am proud to say that we have reached out to the international audience and to show a significant part of our cultural heritage.

We have a lot of interesting responses from the audiences, some were amazed with the performance especially the "Syair" and "Samalindang". Some were more curious about Brunei because they have never heard of it. The acting was superb, though next time we need to work on better dramatic expressions. The main thing is that everyone enjoyed it. So, I hope next year we'll be able to do another performance and win! Thanks for all the contribution made :D

Next week Saturday, BruSheff will be participating in the international event called ICE organised by the International Students' Committee. And as for this one, there are prizes to be won! :) Some of our members will be performing that night so please do come down and support us.

The event will take place:
Date/Time: Saturday, 24th April 2010 at 7 PM
Venue: Octagon, Students Union.
Ticket: £5.50 in Box Office Students Union and £6.00 on the door

As you might have already read the email last night, in a proper way the intention was actually as an encouragement to buy the ticket as soon as possible because we never know if its actually on first-come-first-served basis. Anyway, tickets can be bought from the Box Office in the Students Union for £5.50 and £6.00 on the door itself that night.

BruSheff showcases Brunei's cultural heritage in UK:

The members of Brunei Sheffield Students Society (BruSheff) recently took part in the South East Asia Day in the World Week organised by University of Sheffield, United Kingdom. The World Week was held at the university.

During the World Week, overseas student societies from regions such as Southeast Asia, Middle East, Europe and Africa showcased their nation's cultural heritage. The event was also encouraged by the university to raise awareness and increase knowledge about other nations' cultural heritages.

The Brunei booth, which was set up by the BruSheff members, received warm welcome from the university students as well as staff. The BruSheff members also presented performances consisting of Brunei traditional dances such as "Samalindang" and "Joget". A BruSheff member also gave a "syair" performance.

BruSheff president Khiari Yakob, who is also a second year student at University of Sheffield said, "We found out most of our friends, especially from European countries, are curious about Brunei. Some of them are looking forward to visiting Brunei Darussalam in order to experience for themselves the life in Brunei. In short, this is the best platform for us to expose to the world about Brunei." He appreciated the involvement of all BruSheff members and thanked the university for giving them the chance to showcase Brunei.

In relation to the event's success, BruSheff also thanked the Brunei High Commission at the United Kingdom, Brunei Tourism Board and Postal Service Brunei for supplying materials and traditional food during the exhibition.

BruSheff was established in 2008 and currently has 40 members, all of whom are Bruneian students studying at University of Sheffield. BruSheff members are also active in both BruSheff's community activities and the university's activities.

Easter So Far

Assalamualaikum and hi everyone,

Sorry for a somewhat late update, I guess it's not too late to greet you all a very good Easter up ahead and hopefully everyone has been having a very great one so far. Just a rather quick gentle reminder, do enjoy as much as you can while remembering to take good care of yourself at all cost anytime anywhere. :)

I would also like to take this opportunity on behalf of BruSheff committees to thank everyone who's involved in the South East Asia World Week on the 19th March 2010 last week. Having said that, it was indeed a successful event for us. Such a good achievement is needed for the ICE event which we will make you keep in touch upon.

A very great thanks to Brunei High Commission, Tourism Board of Brunei, Post Office Brunei and those whom we unintentionally forget to mention, for the stuff given (Brunei sweet delicacies, brochures, posters, etc) and the thoughts shared as to make this event even more of a success.

Some of the BruSheff committees staying on the stall getting ready to introduce the culture of Brunei to the students and people with different backgrounds in Sheffield.

Sweetest gratitude goes to the BruSheff girls who had practiced so hard and then performed the Syair and cultural dance of Brunei with Tarian Samalindang and Joget. Well done!

Some of the neighbouring countries like Malaysia, Vietnam and Singapore were also present that day.

Chatsworth House and Quranic Circle

On behalf of the Brusheff committee, we are organising a trip to the Chatsworth House during the easter hols. It is known for its modern and historic artifacts where you can see magnificent displays of art, furniture, sculptures and paintings. The garden is even described as 'one of the best and most vibrant gardens in Britain'

In addition, the house was also used in movies such as Wolfman, the Duchess and Pride and Prejudice (represented as Pemberley, Mr Darcy's home =) )

The MAD Paintball 2010 Update:
We will be using a transport to the event with a 19-seater bus (cost £280). Since 17 people has agreed to join so each has to pay £16.50. On the event of 27th February, each person is advised to bring at least £15 for extra pellets, food, etc. Do not worry, the event organiser will be providing food as well.

Fadhlan has prepared a presentation and will arrange a meeting about a week before the event - it will be held at Aspect 3 on Sunday 21st February from 7 PM to 9 PM.
(Another meeting will once again happen on the 24th, but confirmation will be made and make sure you are all alert!). Any other later arrangement will be further discussed during Fadhlan's presentation.

His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Muizzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam has once again questioned the reasons for the weakness in the religious education system that still does not make religious schooling compulsory in the country, even though the system has existed for 50 years.

His Majesty made the titah during his visit to the Seri Begawan Religious Teachers University College, KUPU SB this morning. His Majesty expressed anxiety that not making religious education compulsory, will bring about social ills among children and people in this country.

His Majesty said the country needs the Religious Teachers University College in response to the requirements of time, time which is regarded as one of progress but at the same time His Majesty said an era of destruction involving the morality of mankind regardless of age groups.

Assalamualaikum,

Firstly to introduce myself, I'm Hjh Norajimah, BruLeeds Assistant Religious Officer. I'm writing this to invite your society to our Majlis Khatam Al-Quran here in Leeds, which will be held some time in March or April, that is during Easter break insyaAllah.

This ceremony is held under BSU London's approval and Ustaz Hj Raminey will come over to Leeds to lead the event. The same Khatam ceremony will be held as well in London during Easter but Ustaz has given us some flexibility and the opportunity to have our own Khatam ceremony in Leeds so that we don't have to travel to London.

So to enliven this ceremony more, I would like to invite your society to join and participate the mentioned event. The proposed date is still under discussion but we will inform you as soon as we have confirmed everything. Hence, those who want to join the event will have to make their own recitations and complete it before the ceremony. Assalamualaikum,

Good evening everyone,

I just would like to inform that there will be a career talk by Petroleum Brunei (PB), who will be coming to Liverpool on 9th december, which is next week. This career talk is open to all Bruneian undergraduate and postgraduate students which hold any type of MOE/ Brunei government scholarships who are doing courses in any line of Engineering, Aerospace, Geology, Geophysics and Geosciences, except for Brunei Shell scholarship students.

This talk is also for those who are interested in working with local Oil & Gas production in the industry after they graduate. I strongly recommend MOE scholars who are taking Engineering in Sheffield, or any other courses as stated, to attend the talk as it will be beneficial for your future career. I am well aware that some of the postgraduates have working experience with PB, so try to share anything with the others if possible. Thanks

Requirements before the event: I will need the names of those who are interested to go to Liverpool to attend the Career talk well before Monday of next week (7th December), for preparation purposes and to be sent to the organiser.

Brusheff's Senior Religous Officer

It is an utmost priority in life that we always seek to establish an inextricable link between our intention and whatever we do in life. As this forms the basis of a mere action to be accepted and rewarded in the eyes of Allah SWT, we must always revise our intention, set it out right, and solely to seek Allah’s pleasure.

An interesting question one may ask, “What is our purpose in life?” or “What are we created for?”

Let us ponder what Allah is speaking and command us to do in Al-Dzariyat Chapter 51, verse 56:

‘I created the jinn and humans for nothing else but they may serve Me’

The point stressed here is that God created man to serve Him to the exclusion of everyone else. Man should serve God by virtue of the fact that He is a man’s Creator. Now since God alone is his Creator, what justification can there be for serving others?

Now, I’m quite certain that most from hearing this, knows what Allah ask us to do. But my friend, simply knowing that, will not put us anywhere near Him. Thus, we must strive hard to understand His Deen, and while sincerely devoting to His commandments, we also strive to reflect and portray this understanding in every spheres of our action. Only then will we satisfy the meaning of Islam, the true meaning of being a Muslim.

Ironically, man tends to hasten their desires to do anything without guidance from God. This is termed as “Self-worship”. Simply put, to be slave of one’s desires is worse than being a beast of the field. No animal will overstep the limits set by God. Every animal eats what has been fixed by God for it; it performs only those functions which are allotted to it. But such an animal is man that when he allows his desires to take over, he commits acts as would make Satan himself shudder.

Perhaps, a man with this kind of attitude may consider obedience and disobedience to be immaterial. Everything else he does take him away from the remembrance of Allah. Man’s own wishes and desires lead him astray. With this attitude one can never truly submit and acknowledge the laws of Allah SWT.

“And who is more astray than he who follows his own likes and dislikes without guidance from God. Surely God guides not the wrongdoers” (Al-Qasas 28:50)

Embrace all paths that will take us towards remembering Allah. The hidayah comes only when we strive to seek for it. Don’t expect miracle to happen and one day we will change. We must work on our faith and always try to stay in the righteous path.

O Allah, Direct us on the Straight Way, the way of those whom You have favoured.

May Allah guide us in everyday of our life .

Go-Kart Racing

Salam,

and Hi everyone,

Just a very quick announcement. We will be organising a much anticipated Go-kart Racing event for the first time. Just wanted to inform everyone regarding the date of the event. I've decided to put it on 19th December (the 1st day of Christmas Holiday). Just the perfect date and time to have fun after the end of semester.

The Go-kart racing event will be held at Parkwood Karting located at Parkwood Road, just next to Sheffield Ski Village. This afternoon, I called the office responsible for the Go-karts, and asked them mainly about price and the number of participants needed for a race. As long as we decide and confirm on how many people joining, they can come up with the format of the race. And the price too, depends on the number of participants.

Here's a brief overview on the event assuming 40 people are joining.

No. of participants: 40

Format of the race: 2½ Hours Team Endurance
Includes 30 minutes qualifying session
Maximum of 5 drivers per team
6 to 8 teams with 3 to 5 drivers per team

Price per team: 150 pounds

Each person will have to pay a total amount of £35 (£10 in advance for booking, £25 few days prior to the event) which could increase or decrease by a few pounds depending on the number of people joining.

So, are you up to it? To those of you who are interested, please follow the steps as shown below:

STEP 1: Make a confirmation with Dorren Naia (dorren_126@hotmail.com) by 10th November 2009 saying that you will be joining the event. Remember to include your full name in your email.

STEP 2: Pay £10 to Nuramaliah Jamaludin through Internet Banking by 15th November 2009. You have the option to pay the full amount of £35 in one as well. More information about this will be given once you have confirmed your place.

STEP 3: Final payment i.e. £25 will be collected during the first week of December preferably via Internet Banking.

This will be our first big event of the year, so I hope that everyone will look forward to it. For further information, you can check out the website and do not hesitate to approach me or other committee members.

Give It A Go! - Peak District Walk Ladybower

Just a quick update for you all, next week Saturday the 14th, Give It A Go! will be having a walk to Peak District Ladybower.

Vital facts for interested people to know:

Venue: Meet at entrance to Sheffield Train Station at 09:45

Price: £2.50 + Train (£3.15 WITH RAILCARD) = £5.65

Attire: Use walking boots/shoes and don't wear jeans; make sure you have waterproofs and bring lunch, water and money for the train.

So with those, I encourage you to bring presumably around £6 or more in case needed. And this 8-mile-walk will be in one whole day journey, so enjoy!

You might have already received a facebook message about BSUnion Winter Games Badminton Poll and "Mengkhatamkan Al-Quran". However, just so everyone is well informed, you can find the details below.

To those (both the LADIES AND GENTS =D) who are keen in the game of badminton, I strongly encourage you to do the Badminton Poll and participate should they decide to include badminton in this year's Winter Games which normally take place on a Saturday sometime in December) Looks like people are voting for yes! :D

I suspect that BruSheff will once again be participating in this year's Winter Games football tournament. So, I'll give an update about it again once the official date is announced. If you are interested to know more about BruSheff football team, I suggest you talk to the senior gentlemen about it e.g. Mizi, Zyden, etc or you could send me an email and I'll forward it to them :)

Regarding Sheffield University International League, Mizi will has kindly volunteered to take care of the registration. Thanks Mizi! So again, if you got any queries do not hesitate to contact Mizi or me (the quickest and easiest way would be through facebook of course :D)

Brunei Sheffield Students’ Society Constitution

1. The aims and objectives of the society:

a) To promote studying in the University of Sheffield to Bruneians and serve as an official representative for the university.

b) To serve as a focal point for current and prospective Bruneian students studying in Sheffield.

c) To monitor students' welfare and education and promote an active environment for its members through social activities and gatherings.

d) To enhance awareness about Brunei Darussalam by promoting the Bruneian tradition and culture to other students of different nationalities and backgrounds.

2. Membership of the society:

a) Membership of the society is opened to all individuals regardless of nationality, race, religion or social background who take an interest in the society.

b) Membership fee shall be decided at the start of every new academic year by the committee.

c) Existing members are required to renew their membership fees at the start of every new academic year.

d) Membership fees are non-refundable.

3. Annual General Meeting and Election:

a) The annual general meeting for the society is to be held at the first month of every new academic year.

b) Election of new committee is to be held during the annual general meeting via a voting process.

4. The Committee:

a) President
He or she holds the overall responsibility of the society. The president has the active role of ensuring the aims and objectives of the society are met with help from the committee and its members. The president acts as a chairperson in every meeting making sure every decision is agreed by the committee and outcomes of the meeting is informed to the society members.

b) Vice President
He or she has the responsibility to assist the president in the running of the society and serve as the acting president in cases when the president is unable to attend or initiate events.

c) Secretary
He or she has the responsibility for the general administration of the society. The secretary is in charge of preparing the minutes of meetings and keeping the society records.

d) Treasurer
He or she has the responsibility of managing the financial accounts of the society. The treasurer is responsible for keeping records of the expenditure of the society and serve as a financial advisor for the society.

e) Logistics and Planning Officer
He or she has the responsibility of implementing planned events by assessing the logistic requirements of the events which includes the venue, equipments needed and etc. The logistics and planning officer is also in charge of keeping the equipments of the society.

f) Social and Welfare Officer
He or she has the responsibility of assisting members of the society in dealing with personal issues and serve as a focal point for prospective students of Sheffield.

g) Sports Officer
He or she has the responsibility of encouraging sports activities in the society by arranging regular sports sessions. The sports officer shall also be aware of other sports activities outside of Sheffield and shall consult the committee for participation.

h) Senior Religious Officer
He or she has the responsibility of managing the religious activities of the society. The senior religious officer is responsible for keeping track of the Islamic calendar and shall consult the committee on proposed activities. He or she is expected to cooperate with the religious officer during such events and must guide him/her if necessary.

i) Religious Officer
He or she has the responsibility of managing the religious activities of the society. The religious officer is responsible for keeping track of the Islamic calendar and shall consult the senior religious officer and committee on proposed activities. He or she is expected to cooperate with the senior religious officer in such events.

j) Webmaster/Information Officer
He or she has the responsibility of keeping members of the society informed of new information and forthcoming events via newsletter and the society’s website of which is managed and continually developed by the webmaster.

k) Year Representative
He or she has the responsibility to serve as a voice for their respective year and bring forward any issues during committee meetings.

l) Sheffield Hallam Representative
He or she has the responsibility to serve as a voice for students from Sheffield Hallam University and bring forward any issues during committee meetings.
